Sacred Music in Sacred Places
We invite you to come along to this once off performance featuring the Melbourne Musicians and soloists…the Tercentenary celebrations of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi…Sunday 24th October 3.00pm at the Convent in Daylesford…
Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was born in Iesi on the 4 January 1710; died in Pozzuoli on the 16 March 1736. While studying with Durante in Naples he worked as a violinist, and in 1731 he presented his first stage work, a drama sacro. He became maestro di cappella to the Prince of Stigliano in 1732 and to the Duke of Maddaloni in 1734. His other works include sacred music (notably the Stabat Mater of 1736), chamber cantatas and duets. What a tragedy that, remarkably talented, he died at the age of only 26. Yet his beautiful creations had an enormous influence on European music.
Frank Pam, Director of the Melbourne Musicians has assembled the finest musicians and soloists to pay homage to Giovanni Battisti Pergolesi and join the many cities of the world in this celebration. The Melbourne Musicians and guest soloists will perform:
Just as dramatically and musically involving were Merlyn Quaife as the inflammatory Betty Joy…” Michael Shmith, The Age, March 15, 2010
“Merlyn Quaife is strident and serpentine as Harry's manipulative wife, Betty, making light work of Dean's angular writing...” Sarah Noble, The Opera Critic, 12 March 2010
